Did you know that five billion people worldwide do not have access to safe surgical care, resulting in more than 17 million preventable deaths per year?
Did you know that this lack of access to safe surgical care is also responsible for one third (28–32%) of the global burden of disease?
Worldwide, 313 million surgeries are performed each year, yet an additional 143 million procedures and 2.28 million surgeons, anaesthesiologists, and obstetricians are needed to meet this unmet demand. To improve access to safe surgery, anaesthesia, and obstetric care for everyone, it is essential that future generations of healthcare workers, public health specialists, and policymakers are involved from the very beginning in global discussions on surgery and interventions. The Standing Committee on Global Surgery addresses this by organising lectures and interactive workshops on global surgery.
Our liaison to InciSioN (International Student Surgical Network), a global student-led initiative focused on improving surgical care worldwide, helps connect BeMSA Ghent with international global surgery projects and opportunities.

Local Officers on global Surgery
The Local Officers on Global Surgery (LOGS) are the board members responsible for coordinating and managing SCGS within BeMSA Ghent. They support and guide the various global surgery-related projects, organise activities and trainings, and ensure that students can actively engage in raising awareness about global surgical inequities, improving access to safe surgical care, and contributing to global health initiatives within the community.
This is an evening with inspiringspeakers revealing the field of Global Surgery and sharing their experience. A lecture where you as a student will have the opportunity to get to know InciSioN better. Moreover, national and international opportunities that are sure to apply in the future will be communicated.
Do you sometimes wonder what safe surgery means? Do you want to take up the challenge and brainstorm together about the difficulties in reaching and receiving care? The aim of the workshop is to make the students think more about Global Surgery, but also to bring important concepts to attention. In addition, the intention is also to bring real-life situation closer to the students and to emphasize one important focus of Global Surgery: "No one should be pushed into poverty because they need surgical care."
